Straight after the horrible events of the December 2004 Tsunami, the caliber of tourist coming to the islandhave changed, before it had been a Mecca for backpackers, year out students along their way North to Bangkok and beyond. It has much to offer but it hasn't lost what attracted backpackershere in the first place, it's still a small piece of paradise for everybody to share and enjoy. The most visited of the beach, Sairee Beach most of the time are filled up with sun worshippers but there's also quieter, more hidden beaches and bays. Suddenly the islandferries were disgorging people with suitcases, not backpacks, laptops not guitars, and what is this; sneekers not flip-flops?!, and some had children too.
